Abstract
In grey image morphology the dilation by an isotropic paraboloid has simple scaling properties. To find the contact between grey landscape (umbra) and paraboloid a local minimum or maximum must be determined for each point in the image. We propose to approximate the grey image by a local second order Taylor expansion before dilating. Then the contact can be calculated without a maximum search and the dilated grey value can be expressed in local derivatives: approximate analytic dilation. In a simplified version the method is applied to the 1D cross section along the local gradient direction.
