Background Information:

Optical information processing & networking, operating in that part of the electromagnetic spectrum that generally spans the ultraviolet, the visible and the infrared region, holds the promise of revolutionizing future capacities of optical processing systems. In telecommunications as well as in optical computing the promise of increased speed and signal bandwidth could potentially "leap-frog" the barriers present in current electronic system by providing pico-second switching times and gigabit/s bandwidths. By virtue of a wide variety of optical processing applications, optical storage and retrieval, displays, optical computing and interconnections are now within reach due to recent advances in devices, algorithms and architectures. Optical processing can be executed by either a coherent monochromatic processor that employs lasers with temporal and spatial coherence, or a spatially incoherent monochromatic system that uses extended sources and diffusers or a white light processor that employs polychromatic sources with spatial coherence.
